Fang EP Release party w./ Therapy 9:00pm
1067 Granville St (Granville @ Nelson) Vancouver BC Can [map]
Darling Fang Fans, Start champing at your bits, right now. Accordion Noire Radio presents: ... FANG EP Release Party with Therapy Friday, February 25th 1067 1067 Granville St. (art space Granville @ Nelson) Doors 8:30 pm // Show 9:00 pm FANG releases its debut EP, in strikingly fine company. Therapy is Vancouver's newest instrumental face-slaying machine, featuring members of Dark Blue World, Cortez the Killer & The Pugs and Crows. Featuring Cole Schmidt, Benji, Sam, Ben Brown and James Meger. Two drummers. Two guitarists. A bass. Get your emotions on. FANG is devastatingly exuberant accordion shout rock, shot through with deep veins of affection. Featuring Barbara Adler on accordion, Ben Brown on drums, and James Meger on bass guitar. There will be epic collaborations between bands. Can you say, "FANG has always wanted to play with two drummers?" I can, and I do, almost constantly. Can you say, "FANG has always wanted to casually drop lines, like, 'it's gonna be epic.'"? Yes! It will be rad as well. More details as time passes, but make sure to mark your calendars now: February 25th is the night you fall in love with accordions and rocking out, all over again, for the very first time. Hearts & Yelping, Fang

Pandora's Box House Show

The B.C. Memory Game Recording Party, with The Brilliant Ally Doors 8:30 pm. Show 9:30 pm | $5
2155 Pandora St. Vancouver BC Can [map]
Hear stories from British Columbia, and be immortalized in all your audio glory at a special, live recording of The B.C. Memory Game. I will be reading stories about Invermere (birds! journalistic courage! condos!) and Hudson's Hope (political activism! compound crossbows! clown cars!).

Jordan Bent will be showing the visual art he has created for these stories, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Featuring new mu sic by The Brilliant Ally

New stories, new music, popcorn, and soft seats for all!

*******************

About The Brilliant Ally

A new band of old faces assembled for the purpose of sharing improvisations + compositions old & new. Mostly written by JAMES MEGER who will play the Bass, with : EVAN ARNTZEN on Tenor Saxophone/Clarinet (Don't worry, he makes both those instruments sound quite pleasing and non-threatening) and of course we won't do it alone, we have to give the drummer some, but who that will be has yet TBA.

If history is your thing there will be music from the 1930's right up until just yesterday. If geography is your thing there will be songs about hills. If you enjoy being at work then there are work songs. If you enjoy good food, well, this music is primarily about that. Also, it's jazz music that is sometimes freer and is on exceptional terms with all kinds of other musics. AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL! This music wants to celebrate like a shark feeding on a dead whale.

(We'll be at El Barrio w/ Ron Samworth on the 9th of Dec if you can't make it out to the Pandora house, but your excuse better not lack an ounce of conviction.)

****************

About The B.C. Memory Game Project:

The B.C. Memory Game is your chance to prove that your town is unforgettable. Barbara Adler is a storyteller who’s been around the province too many times to remember. She’s tired of forgetting where she’s been, so she’s inviting the province to play a game of Memory with her. You remember Memory. It’s the game where you flip over cards to find hidden pairs. Barbara’s playing by collecting stories to make a deck of cards based on towns across B.C. You can play by teaching her something amazing about your town. Stories (and storytellers) can be funny, outrageous, sweet, solemn, surprising, tiny, gargantuan, weird or inspiring.

Fang Fights Back Against Petty Crime! Fundraiser 9:00pm | $10-$15 (pay what you can)
45 W. Hastings Vancouver BC CA [map]
Darling Fang Fans, Friends, and East Van Residents, I have good news and bad news. The bad news is, Fang recently had its house broken into. I'm Barbara, lead accordion in Fang. I lost of a bunch of stuff, listed below: - 1 shitty laptop, with 5 years of writing on it ......- 2 flash disks, with 5 years of writing backed up onto them (you know, in case my laptop got stolen) - jewelery, including my collection of single earrings that have lost their buddies (most of it's fake, sucker) - all of my hair elastics and bobby pins (wtf?) - half a quart of cream (spilled on the floor-- befriending the cat?) - day planners (for planning other robberies?) - my grouse grind pass (good riddance), attached to my backpack (grrr) ...and other stuff, but now it sounds like I'm whining. The robber left behind a small, blue bike helmet. Hardly a fair trade. It is WAY too small for my head. I'm writing to let you know about two things. 1. I will be having a fundraiser show on Friday, October 1st to start scraping money together for a new laptop. If you're in the area, come check it out. Fang is going to play, and some awesome friends. It'll be a good night. We will turn this absurdity into something lovely. 2. If you see a very organized thief, decked out in fake jewelry, swilling cream, and biking up the Grouse Grind without a helmet, give them a stern lecture for me, and maybe a little push. Not enough to kill them, just enough so they roll down a little and have to bike up again. And also tell them that I'd like my hair elastics back. Hearts, Whiskers, and consider locking your windows (but not in a paranoid way-- continue loving life, etc.), Babs

Hole in the Wall

Accordion Night!
2867 Dundas Street Toronto Ontario Can (416) 760-7041 [map]

Fang, Willow Rutherford and Annie Shaw put on a night of accordion for the good people of Toronto. Three accordion groups? How is that even possible? That is such good news.

Willow Rutherford: http://www.myspace.com/willowrutherford

Willow was raised in the wilds of Southern Ontario. She once witnessed the tornado that hit Barrie in the '80's. Pink insulation, tooth floss, converted rice and hobby horses filled the sky. When her bed landed in a tree, she climbed down and discovered a strange instrument, later informed that it was an accordion. Upon first surprising squeeze, she was hooked and has never looked back. Since then, she has travelled the world writing songs about hysterical love, historical magical realism and nature's unpredictability...

Montreal House Concert

Fang & Deer Ashes, Dear (Featuring Baltimore Washington Brandes of The Unsettlers) TBA | TBA
TBA Montreal Quebec Can [map]

Fang & Deer, Ashes Dear get intimate in a sweet little house concert! Details upcoming. Yes, we have a house. Yes, it will be amazing.

Have you SEEN The Unsettlers? ARGH! It is objectively wicked to play with Ben for this night. Deer, Ashes Dear is just as magic. COME.

About Fang:

Fang is Vancouver's premier accordion-drum duo, featuring Barbara Adler (vocals, accordion) and Ben Brown (drums). They are like The White Stripes, except they use an accordion, not a stupid guitar, and they are way punkier and more amazing. Shout chorusus, pop hooks, pseudo-rap, comedic flair and Ray Bans. Fang will make you reconsider how you feel about accordion.

For this tour James Meger (upright bass) will be filling in for Ben Brown on drums.

About Deer Ashes, Dear:

http://www.myspace.com/deerashesdear

Deer Ashes, Dear is the solo project of Baltimore Washington Brandes of The Unsettlers. Featuring Dustyn Lucas on piano and Elie Jalbert on clarinet. The angelic voices of Genevieve Schreier and Brie Neilson can be heard somewhere off in the distance. These songs were born out of a collection of poems and nightmares gathered over the past three years. An album is in the works. Thanks for stopping by, enjoy the music. Baltimore Washington Brandes

Fang February Tour

Fang's First Tour! February 24-March 4
Ontario and Quebec Can [map]

Fang takes its first steps into the giddy world of national touring. Watch here for more dates, details and updates.

Who is Fang, you ask?

Fang is Vancouver's premier accordion and drums duo, featuring Barbara Adler (vocals, accordion) and Ben Brown (drums, vocals). Fang is like the White Stripes, except it is aesthetically superior, because it uses accordion instead of stupid guitar, and we aren't pretending to be brother and sister. We play punky accordion things with audience shouting, hooky choruses, attitude, ray bans, and stage shenanigans.

For this tour, James Meger (upright bass) will be filling in for Ben Brown.

Fang @ CP Cinemas 6:00 pm 9:00 pm

Fang's first stop on its first tour! Yowza!

*****

Fang is Vancouver's premier accordion and drums duo, featuring Barbara Adler (vocals, accordion) and Ben Brown (drums, vocals). Fang is the White Stripes, wisely exchanging their guitar for the magic of a shiny red and white accordion. Patti Smith meets Geoff Berner, meets a bottle of cheap rum. Bass, snare, tambourine, and lots of flailing. Fang is punk yells, pop choruses, audience yelp-alongs, and fast running vocals. Surprisingly little polka. Fang will change how you feel about the accordion.

For this tour, James Meger (upright bass) will be filling in for Ben Brown.

August 14-16: Creative Peace Conference

That's "Peace" as in "Peace River Country," 'yo! North Eastern B.C.

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Solo @ Cafe Deux Soleils

$7-10 Special Guests TBA Here is the scoop. On July 19th, I fly to Fort St. John, B.C. to start a 10-day horseback trip across the Rocky Mountain Divide. To get there, I will be driving with a P.E. teacher from Fort St. John Fort Nelson, hanging a left to Muncho Lake, and hopping aboard a float plane to the staging site. This is serious business! Have you SEEN how far North Fort Nelson is? Pretty North! I’ve been doing the Grouse Grind to get into shape. I own the 10 Essentials of Hiking. I bought a pup tent! A crazy, ultra-light, stake-it-to-the-side-of-a-mountain pup tent! I hope to be capable of erecting this pup tent by the time I’m in Northern B.C. I have to learn how to start fires, cook re-hydrated beans, and generally not die alone in the wilderness! I bought a whistle! I re-read White Fang! Come out on July 17th to hear optimistic, horse-loving tales of my preparation for this mountain-trek. The “After” show will be in September. Will I become a hard-bitten, cuss-faced mountain-woman, who shows up for dinner parties wearing Gortex Gators and fly fishing hats? Will I be eaten by wolves? What is proper etiquette for hitting on people while doing The Grind? Oh! So many mysteries! Plus stories, squeezebox, and general love. See you there! Barbara

7:00pm

Hailing from Vancouver, spoken word artist Barbara Adler has won over audiences across North America and Europe with her quick-witted and fast-hearted brand of poetic storytelling. A four-time member of the Vancouver Poetry Slam team, Barbara has also been a CBC Poet Laureate, and a CBC Poetry Face Off Champion. Combining an infectiously exuberant stage presence with refreshing depth of thought, Barbara’s work has been described as, “funny and deeply moving,” (The Georgia Straight), “carefully crafted,” (Uptown Magazine), and, “uniquely engaging” (Victoria Times Colonist). Her writing brings to life an eclectic cast of characters, including sensitive elk hunters, love-struck rappers, fish cops, suburban nerd heroes, and perhaps most eccentrically of all, her family. The SqueezeBox and Hound Tour will feature a bright addition to Barbara’s set: a semi-new, shiny, 120-button piano accordion. This development shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who knows Barbara as a member of the Western Canadian Folk Music Award nominated folk-poetry group, The Fugitives. What may come as a shock, is how kindly the squeezebox can mix itself with stories and poems. It’s a little bit like Geoff Berner going on a steamy date with Patti Smith, and then staying up all night, to get sentimental over Vinyl Café stories. There’s much less polka than you’d expect (really, almost zero), and audiences agree: accordions and poetry are both weird, but surprisingly great. www.badler.ca www.myspace.com/barbaraadler Barbara will bring it all to Prince George Sunday, October 5 Café Voltaire Books & Co. 7pm All Ages

SqueezeBox and Hound: Live! A night of ferociously jumpy performance, quick-witted + fast-hearted poetry, comic storytelling, and yes-oh-yes-oh-yes: The Accordion. This Summer, Barbara retreated to the quiet, peaceful recluse of Secret Cove (Sunshine Coast, British Columbia). She then filled that quiet and peace with new accordion-storytelling-poem-things, many of which will be previewed at this show. Q: But what is SqueezeBox and Hound? A: It's the name of an upcoming TourAdventureStory! In the upcoming year, Barbara will be packing her accordion onto a Greyhound Bus (The Hound), and touring across B.C. to collect stories and material for an upcoming show. On September 17, have your laughs, thoughtful sighs, and accordion wails recorded for posterity. See what the herons, the country-music-listening neighbours, and the retirees of Secret Cove have been listening to all Summer. Also: Brand New Poems! Recent Poems! Old Poems You Already Like!
